Winners of the 2015 Art of Science Photomicrography Contest

Congratulations to the winners of the 2015 Art of Science Photomicrography Contest! Thank you to everyone who submitted such interesting and beautiful artistic imagery to the contest, and a big thanks to everyone who voted on Instagram for the People's Choice Award winner!

The winning images will be featured on our 2015 calendar, which will be distributed in the January issue of Zebrafish Magazine, and the winners will be awarded a total of $2250.00 in cash prizes.

The People's Choice Award image will be featured on a T-shirt sold to raise scholarship funding for first time attendees for the Zebrafish Husbandry Workshop or Zebrafish International Meeting (in the US). The rules for applying for one of these scholarships will be announced in early 2015.

Check out the finalists in the 2015 Contest on our Instagram page, and see past winners and calendar designs on our Art of Science Photomicrography Contest webpage.
1st Place

Zachary Tobias
Lewis & Clark College
Portland, Oregon

Ubiquitous expression of Brainbow fluorescent proteins in a two day old zebrafish. Multicolor labeling allows tracing of fine neuronal processes.

2nd Place and People's Choice Award

Fengzhu Xiong
Harvard Medical School
Boston, Massachusetts

3D maximum projection of a confocal stack in a 50% epiboly zebrafish embryo (5 hours post fertilization). The nuclei of the cells are shown in yellow (h2b-gfp) and the cell membranes in cyan (mem-cherry).

3rd Place     Jessica Plavicki
University of Wisconsin at Madison

Expression of green fluorescent protein (GFP) being driven by the transcription factor sox9b (green) in the developing zebrafish fin. An antibody against synaptic vesicles (red) marks neural connections and DAPI (blue) marks cell bodies.
